GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Work crews are turning the grounds of the Downtown Market in Grand Rapids into a European-style holiday village ahead of the fourth Christkindl Markt, which opens Wednesday, Nov. 18.
The seasonal market runs through Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, at 435 Ionia Ave. SW. It is open Wednesday through Sunday, with some special dates added near the holiday. Organizers bill it as the largest traditional European Christmas village in West Michigan.
Shoppers will find more than 45 outdoor booths selling ornaments, pottery, candles, jewelry, clothing and handmade gifts. Artisans are coming from Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Turkey and Estonia, alongside West Michigan makers. Inside the market hall, more than 20 vendors and restaurants will serve food and drinks.
Holiday treats include hot cocoa, mulled glühwein, chocolates, fudge, macarons and stollen. The event also features a German-style beverage hall, outdoor curling rinks and private Alpenglobe rentals.
Parking on site is very limited. The Downtown Market lot charges $25 for special event parking, card only, and the city-run McConnell lot across Ionia Avenue charges $15. Christmas Eve hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the market is closed on Thanksgiving Day.
