GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Concerts at the Acrisure Amphitheater on the Grand River can keep going until 11 p.m. after the Grand Rapids City Commission voted without dissent Tuesday night to rewrite the city noise ordinance in the venue’s favor.
The change spells out that the downtown amphitheater is covered by an exemption. Under its special land use permit, the venue may now make noise from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Without the change, the city’s general rule bars loud noise after 10 p.m.
The vote follows a legal fight. Neighbors sued, saying the venue broke the late-night limit. City leaders said commissioners had already granted an exemption back in 2023, but a Kent County judge ruled for the residents, which sent the issue back to the commission.
Commissioner Kelsey Perdue argued the amendment keeps sound limits in place and makes them clearer and more predictable for everyone. Mayor David LaGrand said the fix lines up with the original plan for the venue and that talks about the noise will need to continue.
Opponents told the board that shows have shaken windows and kept them awake, and that music travels for miles, carried along the river into neighborhoods and even beyond the city limits. The amphitheater opened this year as part of the push to remake the riverfront, adding green space and a public walkway.
