GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Grand Rapids Public Schools has its choice for the next superintendent: Allison Tingwall, an administrator with Chicago Public Schools who grew up in Michigan.
Board members made the call Wednesday night after a full day in which both finalists toured schools, met with community groups and sat for board interviews. The hire still depends on the two sides agreeing to a contract.
Tingwall beat out Kelly Greene, who already works for GRPS. She now serves as executive director of principal quality in Chicago, overseeing efforts to hire, train and keep principals at more than 520 schools, and she once ran Curie Metropolitan High School, which has about 3,000 students.
She went to school in Dearborn and Novi before graduating from the University of Michigan, and her doctorate, in urban education leadership, came from the University of Illinois Chicago.
Leadriane Roby stays on as superintendent through the end of this school year. The board extended her contract in February to June 2027 and began the search then. Over the late summer, GRPS held 20 focus groups, ran an online survey and hosted five town halls, one of them online.
